The story continues from the events of the
second film, Alex (Ben Stiller) has a nightmare about them still stranded in Africa and finding they have all have gotten old. Awaking from his dream, Alex suggests to Marty (Chris Rock), Melman (David Schwimmer), and Gloria (Jada Pinkett Smith) that they should go to Monte Carlo to get the Penguins to fly them back to New York City, which everyone agrees.Plot

In Monte Carlo, the Penguins and two chimpanzees, Mason and Phil (disguising as the King of Versailles) keep winning in gambling until Alex's gang's attempt to reach them blunders and sparks chaos in the Hotel De Paris. Hotel security calls Monaco Animal Control officer Captain Chantel DuBois (Frances McDormand) to deal with the animals, but she wants them, including Alex, dead as trophies. During a high-speed chase between the relentless DuBois and the animals in a truck driven by the Penguins to reach their aircraft, the animals barely manage to elude her.
In the skies of France, the plane's engines fail again and it crashes into a suburban train yard with the authorities closing in. Seeing their only chance of escape is on a circus train, the four desperately claim that they are circus animals themselves, which convinces circus mates Stefano the Sea Lion (Martin Short) and Gia the Jaguar (Jessica Chastain) to let them in. The animals soon learn from Stefano that they are performing in Rome andLondon, where they plan to impress a promoter to get them on their first American tour. Before the zoo animal's claim is discredited, the penguins suddenly appear with an offer to purchase the circus themselves, resulting the pleased departure of all the human staff. Meanwhile, Julien (Sacha Baron Cohen) falls in love with Sonya the Bear (Frank Welker) and goes on a city tour across Rome while the others are preparing for the performance at the Roman Coliseum. To the Zoo animals' horror, the circus proves so inept that the angered audience demands refunds to the point of chasing the circus to the departing train to London.
En route to London, the Zoo gang is in despair of wasting their money on the failing circus and no closer to getting home, but Stefano reveals to Alex that Vitaly the Tiger (Bryan Cranston) was once their inspiration. Once a professional ring jumper, his attempt at jumping through a flaming pinkie ring ended in disaster in which he burned his fur due to using too much olive oil, which is flammable, destroying his confidence in his talent and the whole circus suffered by his example. An inspired Alex has the train make a stop at the Alps and convinces the performers to rework their act to become the opposite of the successful human-only Cirque du Soleil as an animal-only circus. Heartened by Alex's vision, the zoo animals and the circus ones develop sophisticated acts together and become closer friends for their efforts.
Meanwhile, DuBois is held in custody in Rome after causing problems with the local police officers while chasing the animals out of her jurisdiction, but escapes and researches her quarry. Once accomplished, DuBois recruits her injured men and heads towards the Alps, forcing the Four and the penguins to proceed to London despite their incomplete rehearsals. In London, the troupe prepare for the promoter in the audience, but Vitaly is discovered packing to leave. Alex convinces Vitaly to stay by reminding him of how he enjoys performing the impossible and suggests that he use conditioner shampoo as a safer lubricant to perform his flaming ring jump. As a result, Vitaly's stunt is performed perfectly, which proves to be just the opening of a spectacularly successful show. After the impressed promoter arranges for an American tour, DuBois shows up with a paper showing that Alex is a missing lion from the zoo. Though the penguins are able to foil DuBois' plan to capture Alex, the latter is forced to confess that the four of them are just zoo animals trying to get home, disappointing the others who feel used and lied to.
Finally, both the zoo animals and the circus arrive in New York City. However, the circus finds that they are incomplete without the Four. The zoo group finally returns to the closed Central Park Zoo, only to realize that their time outside has changed them too much for them to return to captivity. Unfortunately, they are then tranquilized and captured by DuBois. The Zoo staff, delighted by Alex's reappearance thank DuBois (believing that she was trying to return them). Julien manages to reach the circus (despite being darted) and the penguins realize that the group has been ambushed. Upon learning about the Four's plight, Gia convinces the circus to rescue their friends and they set out for the zoo, performing aboard a flying circus, with the rescue mission dubbed "Operation: Afro Circus."
Meanwhile at the zoo, Alex awakens to find that he along with Marty, Melman, and Gloria are in their enclosures, surrounded by tall chain-link fences to keep them from escaping again. DuBois steps on stage to receive a cheque of appreciation from the zoo, but at the same time loads a poison dart into a gun hidden in a foam finger in preparation to kill Alex. The circus animals arrive in time to stop Dubois from harming Alex and a massive brawl occurs where the circus uses all of what they developed with the Four to rescue their friends. As the group tries to leave, DuBois attempts to kill Stefano, who is stranded at the zoo. However, Alex saves Stefano and together, they defeat DuBois and escape.
Realizing that they truly belong with their new friends, Alex and his friends decide to join the circus permanently and they all happily proceed on with their American tour, while DuBois and her men finds themselves, oddly enough just like Alex and his friends in the first film, on a cargo box bound for Madagascar.

DreamWorks Animation's CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg confirmed in 2008 that there will be an additional sequel to Madagascar andMadagascar: Escape 2 Africa. Katzenberg stated, "There is at least one more chapter. We ultimately want to see the characters make it back to New York."[5] At the Television Critics Association press tour, in January 2009, Katzenberg was asked if there will be a third film in the series. He replied, "Yes, we are making a Madagascar 3 now, and it will be out in the summer of 2012."[6]

[edit]Reception

[edit]Critical response

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted has received generally positive reviews. Based on 80 reviews, the film currently holds a 'Fresh' rating of 74% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with an average rating of 6.7/10. Stephen Witty of the Newark The Star-Ledgercalls the movie a "fun and fast family entertainment." Michael Dequina of TheMovieReport.com says the movie offers "visually imaginative, all ages entertainment."[11] However on Metacritic it currently holds a score of 59 out of 100, based on 24 reviews, indicating "mixed or average reviews."

[edit]Pre-release tracking

During the week preceding Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted's release there were many contradicting opinions on whether it would out-gross Prometheus during their simultaneous release. As of June 6, 2012, Fandango reported that Prometheus was leading with 42% of daily sales, while Madagascar 3 was responsible for 35% of daily sales. Additionally, the online tracking for Prometheus surged with each new piece of promotional footage.[12] However, pre-release tracking is usually less reliable for animated films; sinceMadagascar 3 was the first truly family-oriented film of the summer, many speculated that there would be large demand for it.[13] The official DreamWorks Animation and Paramount prediction placed Madagascar 3 at about $45 million, while 20th Century Fox predicted around $30 million for Prometheus.[14] As the weekend came closer, pre-release audience surveys suggested a $55 million debut forMadagascar 3 and $50-$55 million for Prometheus.[15] Madagascar 3 also had the advantage of a wider release (4,258 theaters against 3,394 theaters for Prometheus). Furthermore, the R rating of the latter was also considered a limiting obstacle.[16]

[edit]Box office

The film has grossed $84,950,532 in North America, and $110,504,051 in other countries, as of June 14, 2012, for a worldwide total of $195,454,583.[4]
In North America, the film made $20.5 million on its opening day, which is higher than the opening day grosses of the original film($13.9 million) and its sequel ($17.6 million).[17] For its opening weekend, the film ranked at the #1 spot, beating Prometheus, with $60.3 million, which was more than the first film's $47.2 million, but less than the sequel's $63.1 million.[18]
Outside North America, on its opening weekend, Madagascar 3 topped the box office with $75.5 million from 28 countries. Its three highest-grossing openings were Russia and the CIS ($16.6 million), Brazil ($10.8 million in 5 days) and China ($10.4 million).[19] It set an opening-day record for an animated film in Russia, with $3.7 million.[20] It set an opening-weekend record for any film in Argentina ($3.80 million)[21] and opening-weekend records for animated films in Brazil, Venezuela and Trinidad.[22]
